OUR STORY
The 11 Plus and Beyond Academy was created from a simple belief: children and young people thrive when excellent teaching is combined with genuine care. Families should be able to speak openly about concerns, learners should feel safe enough to ask questions, and tuition should respond to the person rather than follow a one-size-fits-all programme.
As a family-owned business, our reputation is personal. We value long-term relationships with parents and carers, honest conversations about progress and the confidence that comes from knowing who is responsible for a child’s learning. Decisions are guided by what will help the learner move forward, not by pressure to make unrealistic promises.
Our approach combines the warmth and continuity families expect from a small academy with the curriculum understanding, assessment knowledge and high expectations developed through many years in schools. This allows us to support learners from the early foundations of primary education through 11+ preparation, Year 6, KS3 and GCSE.
OUR LEAD TUTOR
The academy’s lead tutor is a current school leader with more than thirty years of experience in education. Across that career, they have worked with learners at every key stage and developed a clear understanding of how knowledge, confidence, assessment and independence change as children grow.
Remaining in school leadership means the academy is informed by the realities of current education: curriculum expectations, the demands placed on pupils, the transition between key stages, approaches to assessment and the importance of safeguarding, inclusion and positive relationships. This professional perspective is brought into tuition in a calm and accessible way.
Alongside school-based work, the lead tutor has provided private tuition for twenty years. This extensive one-to-one and small-group experience has shown that learners often reveal needs in tuition that remain hidden in a larger classroom. A pause, an unfinished explanation or a reluctance to attempt a question can provide valuable information about what support is needed next.

Knowing the curriculum matters. Knowing how a learner feels when they cannot access it matters too. Effective tuition attends to both.
Academy records show a 95% success rate for pupils prepared for the 11+ by the lead tutor.
A RECORD OF IMPACT WITH HONEST EXPECTATIONS
However, experience tells us they are not a guarantee of an individual result. Every learner begins from a different starting point and progress depends on need, attendance, engagement and sustained practice.
Results matter because they can open opportunities and confirm that hard work is making a difference. At the same time, a result is never the whole child. We look for progress in attainment, understanding, confidence, resilience and independence.
The lead tutor has also helped pupils boost attainment in Year 6 SATs and supported GCSE students to improve performance in Maths and English. These outcomes have been achieved by identifying the barriers that matter most, teaching them explicitly and helping learners apply strengthened knowledge with increasing independence.
We do not treat success as the result of a single worksheet, shortcut or formula. Progress is built through secure foundations, carefully sequenced teaching, practice that responds to evidence and encouragement that helps a learner persist when work becomes difficult.

Learners can ask, attempt, reconsider and try again. They are challenged without being diminished and supported without being made dependent.
OUR EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY
Learning requires risk. A child may need to admit that they do not understand, attempt a method they have previously avoided or offer an interpretation without knowing whether others will agree. Those risks become possible when the learner feels respected and knows that a mistake will be used to guide teaching rather than to embarrass them.
We therefore create a calm, purposeful environment in which questions are normal, ideas are listened to and feedback is constructive. Learners are encouraged to recognise what they already do well while understanding that gaps are not fixed labels. They are priorities that can be addressed through clear teaching and practice.
HOW WE WORK
The same care and professional judgement that shape our values also shape the way tuition is planned. Support begins with evidence and remains responsive as the learner develops.
Groups are deliberately small so that learners can benefit from shared discussion while remaining visible to the tutor. Understanding can be checked, questions answered and challenge adapted without a student becoming lost in a large class. The group is a community, but each learner’s journey remains personal.
Parents and carers bring valuable knowledge of the child. We listen to that perspective and provide clear information about strengths, priorities and progress. Where intervention or a change of focus is recommended, the reason and intended outcome are explained. Our aim is to give families confidence in the learning process without creating unnecessary pressure at home.
