Key Stage 3 is a demanding period of change. Pupils move between subjects, teachers and classrooms, meet more complex vocabulary and are expected to work with increasing independence. A small misunderstanding can grow into a wider gap, and a learner who once felt confident may begin to doubt their ability.

Our KS3 Booster Sessions provide focused English and Maths support for pupils in Years 7, 8 and 9. We begin with what the individual learner already knows, identify the areas that need attention and build a carefully paced route forward. Teaching responds to need rather than following a one-size-fits-all worksheet programme.

Learners work in small groups where they benefit from discussion and shared thinking while receiving meaningful personal attention. Tutors can question individuals, notice misconceptions and offer a different explanation when needed. Every pupil is encouraged to recognise their strengths, contribute ideas and take an active role in their progress.

Year 7 – securing the transition

Year 7 pupils are adapting to new routines, higher expectations and a broader curriculum. We help them connect new secondary learning with the foundations developed at primary school, while building reliable study habits and the confidence to seek help early.

Foundation check: identifying any gaps in reading, writing, number or problem-solving that may limit access to Year 7 work.

Year 9 – building the bridge to GCSE

Year 9 is the bridge between KS3 and GCSE. We consolidate the knowledge that future courses depend on, strengthen examination habits and help pupils approach the next stage with realistic confidence rather than anxiety.

Priority consolidation: closing gaps in essential English and Maths knowledge before GCSE content becomes more demanding.

KS3 ENGLISH

Reading, writing and communicating with confidence

English support is designed to help pupils understand increasingly challenging texts and communicate ideas with clarity. We strengthen the technical foundations of writing while also developing vocabulary, interpretation and analytical thinking.

Reading and analysis

Comprehension: retrieving relevant information, making inferences and explaining ideas using evidence from a text.
Vocabulary: using context, word roots and morphology to understand unfamiliar academic and literary language.
Writer’s methods: recognising language, structural and presentational choices and explaining their effect with increasing precision.
Comparison: identifying meaningful similarities and differences between texts, viewpoints, themes or methods.
Critical reading: questioning ideas, distinguishing fact from opinion and considering purpose, audience and reliability.

Writing and accuracy

Sentence control: constructing accurate sentences, using varied structures and avoiding fragments or run-on sentences.
Paragraphing and organisation: sequencing ideas logically and using clear openings, development and conclusions.
Spelling, punctuation and grammar: addressing recurring errors and applying conventions consistently in independent work.
Creative writing: using description, character, setting, viewpoint and structure to shape an engaging response.
Transactional writing: adapting tone, vocabulary and structure for purposes such as explaining, arguing, persuading or informing.
Review and editing: rereading work, identifying weaknesses and making purposeful improvements rather than only correcting surface errors.

ENGLISH CONFIDENCE GROWS THROUGH EXPRESSION

KS3 MATHS

Secure methods, flexible reasoning and purposeful problem-solving

Maths support focuses on understanding as well as procedure. Pupils learn why a method works, when it is useful and how to decide whether an answer is reasonable. Secure foundations allow more advanced topics to feel manageable rather than mysterious.

Number and proportional reasoning

Number fluency: place value, negative numbers, the four operations, order of operations, factors, multiples and powers.
Fractions, decimals and percentages: equivalence, calculation, comparison and application in multi-step problems.
Ratio and proportion: simplifying ratios, sharing amounts, direct proportion, scale and real-life applications.
Estimation and accuracy: rounding, checking, significant figures where appropriate and judging whether an answer is sensible.

Algebra

Algebraic language: using symbols, expressions and formulae confidently and understanding what variables represent.
Manipulation: collecting like terms, expanding brackets, substitution and rearranging simple formulae at an appropriate level.
Equations and inequalities: solving step by step, checking solutions and representing values accurately.
Sequences and graphs: recognising rules, finding terms, interpreting coordinates and understanding relationships between quantities.

Geometry, measures, statistics and probability

Shape and space: angles, polygons, transformations, constructions, coordinates and spatial reasoning.
Measures: perimeter, area, volume, units, scale and choosing suitable formulae.
Data: reading and creating tables and graphs, calculating averages and interpreting what data shows.
Probability: describing likelihood, calculating simple probabilities and using diagrams or tables to organise outcomes.
Problem-solving: identifying what is being asked, choosing relevant information and sustaining a clear multi-step solution.

ASSESSMENT AND INTERVENTION

Finding gaps and responding before they become barriers

Assessment is used to understand the learner and improve teaching. An initial assessment provides a starting profile, while questions, discussion, practice tasks and review activities show how securely knowledge is being applied. We look beyond the final answer to identify the thinking that led to it.

Where a specific gap is limiting wider progress, a focused intervention session may be recommended. This additional support sits alongside the small-group programme and concentrates on a clearly defined priority, such as fraction fluency, algebraic manipulation, sentence accuracy, inference or paragraph structure.

How targeted intervention works

We define the exact knowledge, skill or misconception requiring attention using assessment and lesson evidence.
The reason for the recommendation and the intended outcome are explained clearly to parents and the learner.
The intervention revisits the priority through clear modelling, guided practice and carefully selected independent application.
The learner applies the strengthened skill in later group lessons and across wider curriculum tasks.
We check whether the gap is closing and decide whether the pupil is ready to move on or would benefit from further practice.

We establish a respectful culture in which learners listen to others, explain their thinking and understand that mistakes are part of improvement. Pupils are invited to contribute but are not embarrassed or placed under unnecessary pressure. Confidence is built carefully through preparation, success and honest encouragement.

Sessions vary according to the group and current priorities, but teaching follows a clear cycle so that pupils understand what they are learning and how it connects with their wider progress.

Retrieval: a short activity revisits important prior knowledge and reveals anything that needs immediate clarification.
Clear explanation: a concept or strategy is broken into manageable steps and modelled using precise subject vocabulary.
Guided practice: pupils work through examples with questions, prompts and feedback so misconceptions are corrected early.
Independent application: learners apply the skill with reduced support, including in unfamiliar or multi-step tasks.
Challenge and extension: pupils who are secure deepen their thinking through reasoning, explanation or more demanding application.
Review: the group revisits key learning, identifies progress and records a clear next step.

Building self-esteem, resilience and independence

A learner who repeatedly feels confused may begin to believe they are simply “not good” at English or Maths. We challenge that belief through clear teaching and achievable next steps. Confidence grows when pupils can see that effort, effective strategies and support lead to improvement.
Praise is specific and credible. We recognise a clearer explanation, a better organised paragraph, accurate working, improved checking or the decision to ask a thoughtful question. When work is incorrect, feedback addresses the method and next action rather than the young person’s worth or ability.
As knowledge becomes secure, support is reduced gradually. Pupils are encouraged to choose strategies, organise their own responses, review mistakes and take increasing responsibility for what they need to practise.
